Can you put gold leaf on stingray leather?

I'm planning on having a pair of shoes custom made fairly soon and i want them to be in an extremely metallic looking gold stingray leather. I was wondering if there was a way to gild stingray leather whilst keeping the gold leaf resistant to general wear and tear. If it can't be done i'd really appreciate suggestions of possible alternative materials that will still offer the same effect or suppliers who stock gold stingray leather.
